I saw this yesterday with my family. We all loved it.
Armando Iannucci's own take on the Dickens epic rags to riches to rags to riches story sees Dev Patel wander through his fraught life, saved by a wild cornucopia of eccentric characters at every turn.
A considerable change of style for Iannucci after Into the Loop and The Death of Stalin with a much gentler, heart warming, but often very funny life story held together by a spot on performance from Dev Patel - what star quality and presence this guy has developed. He is supported throughout by many wonderful actors often hilariously bringing Dickens' characters to life - notably Swinton, Capaldi and a wonderful Laurian turn from Hugh Laurie himself.
Possibly a little rushed in places, where Iannucci flies on to the next set when a pause may occasionally have helped certain moving scenes sink in a bit more, but overall a triumph.

It seems that woke, PC reviewers leave 9 and 10 star reviews just because of the diverse casting and this is as myopic as the 1 star haters. It's a 5 or 6 star movie at best. I am a big fan of The Death of Stalin which is much more dark and also funnier and I think Copperfield would have been a better movie if Armando Iannuci had written it in a similar way. Overall a bit underwhelming but it passed a couple of hours on a Tuesday night.

Hollywood now has a horrific habit of virtue signalling, happily rewriting history and changing the sex, race and sexuality of any character in any franchise to appease vocal minorities. Of course, the flip side of that is the risk of offending his own community, basically pretending that he is not Indian. Similarly, multiple actors were not employed here, precisely BECAUSE they were race-appropriate, which is crazy. Dev is a good actor, but give him in an original property that respects and embraces his heritage, and let him and the film succeed on their own merits. For instance, adopt the 'theme' of David Copperfield, just don't rewrite the original story with different characters, and present it as 'David Copperfield.
